Description.
Painted with famille rose type decoration, consisting of chrysanthemums, bamboo, holey rocks, and insects, in the style adopted by Bow in its earlier years. The pattern is supplemented by gilded detailing. The pieces are of circular shape, with broadly oval and triangular reticulations. The exterior of the baskets includes painted stylised florets and insects.

The pieces have no maker's mark, but do have a painter's mark-47. We are not aware of the identity of the painter, but Adams and Redstone do list a number of known, or presumed, Bow workers.  Some mentioned began working no earlier than the mid 1750s, a date too late to have been responsible for painting this particular piece. Only six painters could have painted the pieces, out of the list of workers provided by Adams and Redstone, if one disallows those who started at the factory later than 1754. Unfortunately, we cannot determine who, of those six, actually painted the pieces.

We are selling another similar basket, of slightly smaller size, the painting style of which is, from all practical perspectives, identical to this piece and which bears the same painter's number. It seems likely, more or less beyond peradventure, that the three pieces were made at the same time and have remained together for the succeeding two and three-quarter centuries! If you are interested in the other piece, please let us know.

Condition.
in excellent antique condition, save for a certain amount of crazing in certain areas, some kiln spit and the fact that the glaze does not fully cover the base of the piece.

Dimensions.
23.5cm in width.

We use recycled packaging. It may not look pretty, but it helps our environmental footprint!

We do not offer combined postage.

If the postage policy specifies that postage is included, we will send by tracked postage, rather than tracked and signed. If you wish for the latter, please let us know. There will be an additional charge which we will notify to you.

When we send by tracked alone the item will be at your risk from the point that we can prove, by means of showing a delivery confirmation, that it was delivered to your premises. Until that point, the item will be at our risk.

We are prepared to deliver all over the world, except (for obvious reasons, given the Russian state's  unprovoked acts of aggression in Ukraine) to Russia.

We aim to ensure that our descriptions are absolutely accurate. Nevertheless, antique porcelain is never perfect. We use high definition photography with the aim of making the condition of any item extremely clear. Defects which are obvious in the photography we use are deemed to have been declared, even if we do not specifically refer to them in the description.

Restoration is sometimes extremely difficult to detect. We use UV light and transmitted light to check whether restoration has occurred. Sometimes, even those methodologies do not reveal restoration. If you are able, notwithstanding the definition, to show that restoration of a significant nature has occurred, we would obviously allow cancellation of the sale in such circumstances.
